Yoga Stretching Exercises

On Fire Fitness & Physical Therapy has one mission: promoting fitness, health and lifestyle changes we all need to stay happy and healthy well into our senior years.

Yoga is a great way to stretch your body and relax. These yoga stretching exercises will help you relieve your stress and focus on yourself.

Child’s pose

This exercise helps improve circulation, stretches the hips, back, shoulders and neck. Start by kneeling down with your knees together then place your forehead on the ground in front of you then extend one leg out behind you while placing hands flat on the floor next to your buttocks. Extend another arm alongside that leg while keeping your head resting on the floor. Hold for 5 minutes or longer if comfortable.

Seated forward bend

This exercise helps stretch hamstrings and the spine as well as increase blood flow to the brain which can help reduce depression symptoms such as headaches/migraines,  arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Bend forward placing hands on the floor by your feet while keeping back straight. Hold for 5 minutes or longer if comfortable.

Supine twist

This exercise helps stretch shoulders, chest, and abdominal muscles as well as reduce fatigue that many people feel when working long hours at a desk job or sitting all day watching TV. Lie down on the ground with one arm out to the side then raise another arm above the head so it is also out to the side with palms facing each other. Twist torso towards raised hand while keeping hips leveled and both arms pointing upwards toward the ceiling. Repeat 10 times for each arm alternating between raising the right or left arm first then switch sides.

Tadasana Yoga Stretching Exercises For Flexibility

Child pose is a Yoga posture that relaxes the body and mind, while gently stretching your back, thighs, groin, and shoulders. It helps by loosening up tight hips, hamstrings, and calves after sitting for long periods of time or exercising. Yoga for flexibility stretches muscles and ligaments over time to increase the overall suppleness of the joints. Yoga lessons can be practiced in studios or outside on sandy beaches while sunbathing. Yoga poses are good as they have no adverse side effects like many other types of exercises do such as, aerobic workouts that build strength but may cause joint pain from overexertion or muscle tears. Yoga is a great exercise for teens with hyperactivity. Yoga exercises are great for teaching teenagers and kids how to calm their minds, relax and focus on themselves without the distraction of video games or watching television that can fill up a lot of time that could be better spent doing Yoga.

Xingyiquan: Flexibility Exercises

Being physically flexible is very important in Xingyi Quan (Hsing I Chuan) training whether it be Taijiquan or Ba Gua Zhang. Ba Gua Zhang practitioners don’t like to stretch and they attribute this sentiment to being a cause for poor health according to an ancient saying, “If one doesn’t have good flexibility then one will become ill”. However, proper stretching should not be rushed but completed with deep breaths held through each pose.

Yoga stretching exercises are a great way to help increase your flexibility and reduce tightness in the muscles. You can do simple stretches such as a child’s pose, seated forward bend, supine twist, or tadasana yoga stretching exercises for flexibility at home. If you’re looking for more of an intense workout that will really get deep into your muscles and stretch them out, xingyiquan is a good place to start. It’s also been shown to improve lung capacity by increasing the volume of the air one breathes with each breath cycle while simultaneously strengthening abdominal muscle groups which support breathing movements.
