What are the three aspects of yoga that I enjoy?

On Fire Fitness & Physical Therapy has one mission: promoting fitness, health and lifestyle changes we all need to stay happy and healthy well into our senior years.

There are many different aspects to yoga, and everyone enjoys different things about it. For me, the three aspects of yoga that I enjoy the most are the physical practice, the breath work, and the meditation. Each one of these aspects helps me to connect with my body and my mind in a different way, and I find that they all complement each other nicely. If you’re looking for a way to connect more deeply with yourself, I highly recommend giving yoga a try!

Here are three good Reasons why you should Try Yoga

Breathing

Whether you have a hyperactive mind or are just stressed, yoga is the perfect antidote. It helps you focus on your breathing by way of deep diaphragmatic breathing which brings oxygen to every cell in your body and helps fight stress, fatigue and depression. Asanas (poses) also help strengthen immunity as you breathe easily through them. I love this aspect because it always reminds me to stop rushing around like crazy! And when I do stop for a few minutes, whether it’s at work or home, my anxiety level comes down drastically. This type of breathing should be done daily- before meditation because deep breathing relaxes the nervous system; during meditation because it stimulates the relaxation response; and after meditating to calm the mind and revitalize.

Stretching

When I’m stressed, going for a walk or run helps me burn it off. But even walking fast won’t help stretch my muscles. Yoga provides just that-a combination of asanas that stretch out your body and bring it into balance starting from the feet to your neck. This is essential as tight muscles can cause problems such as headaches and sciatica pain. As you stretch your limbs, you also increase flexibility which prevents injuries, improves posture and enhances quality of life. The more flexible we become, the better we feel about ourselves! And so begins our quest for self-improvement and transformation through yoga! What an awesome way to start the day with all the benefits of stretching!

Relaxation

The last aspect I love about yoga is the relaxation technique. Yoga teaches us to let go of our tensions and anxieties by focusing on our breathing while holding specific poses for a certain amount of time. As you continue doing this, your mind gets trained to focus more which makes it easier to let go of negative thoughts. This helps you become more resilient during tough times in life-be it at work or with family members. Many people are unaware that stress can have long term adverse effects on one’s health such as high blood pressure, insomnia etc. By practicing just 5 minutes of deep diaphragmatic breathing every day, you can lower cortisol levels (stress hormone) by up to 23%. You can also do this technique at work to help you be more productive.

Yoga has been a part of my life for about five years now. The first thing I love about yoga is that it’s a great way to relieve stress and unwind after a long day at work or school. When you’re practicing yoga, your body becomes more flexible which can have some pretty important health benefits as well! Finally, the third reason why I really enjoy doing yoga is because it just feels good! With all those reasons combined into one activity, there’s no wonder why so many people are turning to this practice these days.  If any of those three things sound appealing to you too, give us call today!
